4 Ludicrous Myths Regarding Asphalt Shingled Roofs

People love to share their “expert” opinions, even if they don’t know what they’re talking about. Berlet Roofing will debunk some of the most common myths about asphalt shingled roofs in this blog post. We’ll also provide information that will help you decide if you’re considering getting a new roof.

Myth 1:

Asphalt Shingles Lose Their Granules After Installation

There’s a common misconception that asphalt shingles lose their granules after installation. However, this is a myth. Asphalt shingles are made up of two main materials: the base mat and the asphalt coating. The base mat is typically made from fiberglass or organic materials, while the asphalt coating is a mixture of asphalt and mineral fillers. The base mat is first saturated with asphalt during the manufacturing process, then coated with a layer of mineral granules. The granules are then embedded into the hot asphalt, creating a strong bond between the two materials. Once the shingles have cooled and cured, they are ready for installation. In other words, the granules are not loose after installation – they’re tightly bonded to the shingle! So if you notice any granules in your gutters or on your lawn after a new roof is installed, rest assured that they were there before the roof was put on.

Myth 2:

Asphalt Shingles Contain Asbestos

Asphalt shingles are a very common & preferred choice for homeowners due to their durability and low cost. However, there is a common misconception that asphalt shingles contain asbestos. This is not true. Asbestos was once used in building materials, but it has been banned in the United States since the 1970s. While some older asphalt shingles may contain traces of asbestos, it is not present in any newly manufactured shingles.

Myth 3:

Asphalt Shingle Adhesive Cures Immediately

As anyone who has ever attempted to repair a roof knows, asphalt shingle adhesive does not cure immediately. It can take days to sometimes weeks for the adhesive to cure fully. This can be frustrating for homeowners eager to get the job done, but it is important to be patient. Once the adhesive has cured, it will provide a strong and durable bond that will last for many years. It’s important to protect the exposed adhesive from wind and rain. Otherwise, you may find yourself making another trip to the hardware store sooner than you had hoped.

Myth 4:

Dark-Coloured Roofs Increase Energy Costs

It’s a commonly held belief that dark-coloured roofs increase energy costs in the summer. However, this is a myth. While it’s true that dark surfaces absorb more heat than light surfaces, the temperature difference is quite small. In most cases, it’s simply not enough to offset the benefits of a darker roof.
